Faster and Safer Battery Charging with NTC Sensor

By Dean Schwartz (SWAG Master): When it’s done correctly, nothing impresses people more than new technology. But whether we’re talking about phones, tablets, headphones, smartwatches, or anything else, all tech has one thing in common: a battery.  Thankfully, battery technology has come a long way, mainly out of necessity. Consumers are increasingly demanding their devices work longer and charge faster (not to mention their pleas for lighter and more durable devices, as well) – and that’s a tall order for any company, even the global ones worth billions of dollars. Luckily, technology is helping fill that gap. Let’s take a closer look at improvements in battery technology and how a little thing called an NTC sensor has provided a much-needed level of safety to new devices. Faster and Safer Battery Charging with NTC Sensor

To understand the importance of the NTC sensor, we first need to understand a bit about the battery itself. In order for batteries to last longer and charge faster, many manufacturers have switched to new materials such as lithium-ion. These new batteries are smaller, more light weight, and gave the customers exactly what they wanted (stronger power, less charge time) due to their high energy density; but switching to these new materials increased the complexity of the battery and, in turn, introduced risks such as overheating.

Remember a few years ago when the Samsung Galaxy batteries caught fire? Or when hover-boards first came out and people quickly found that the batteries could catch fire or even explode? Yep! Those were all because of lithium-ion batteries.

Retailers and manufacturers obviously need to ensure their products are safe, but they also want to give the customers what they’ve been clamoring for. So what’s a company to do? Fear not- the NTC sensor is here.

NTC stands for negative temperature coefficient. We’ll spare you all of the engineering specifications because, frankly, it’s not important to most people. All you need to know is that NTC sensors prevent batteries from overheating and, in some cases, will even automatically shut down the battery once it’s fully charged. They also monitor your battery temperature to ensure that it never gets too low, which would slow the charging rate and result in the opposite of what customers are looking for. NTC sensors won’t only prevent potential fires, though, they also have the added benefit of increasing your overall battery life expectancy! This tech really is a no-brainer for all premium electronics.

NTC sensors may be small, but they are mighty, and they play a key role in the advancement of battery technology.
